Sweden consistently ranks among the best countries in the world for quality of life, and it shows in daily life: excellent public services, strong worker protections, a genuine respect for work-life balance, and a deep connection to nature.

It is also one of the most English-friendly countries on earth — virtually everyone speaks excellent English — which makes the practical side of relocating unusually smooth, even before you learn any Swedish.

Sweden punches far above its weight in innovation — Spotify, Klarna, King and Mojang all began here. Tech, fintech, gaming, life sciences, e-commerce and clean tech are all strong, concentrated in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö.

International companies work in English, though Swedish helps for client-facing roles. Work culture is flat, consensus-driven and protective of personal time — overtime is uncommon and holidays are genuinely taken.

EU/EEA/Swiss citizens can work freely and should register with Skatteverket to obtain a personnummer — the personal ID number that unlocks almost everything in Sweden, from banking to healthcare to phone contracts.

Non-EU citizens need a work permit (typically employer-sponsored) before arrival. Once you have your personnummer, getting a BankID digital identity should be your immediate next priority.

Sweden is expensive, but salaries are correspondingly high and public services exceptional. A realistic monthly budget including rent is €2,200–3,800 depending on the city, with Stockholm the priciest.

Transport is excellent and good value via monthly passes; alcohol (sold through the state Systembolaget) and eating out are the notable expenses, so many residents cook at home.

Swedish life follows the seasons — long, bright summers spent outdoors and swimming, and dark, cosy winters built around fika (the daily coffee-and-cake ritual), candlelight and saunas. Nature is always close.

Swedes can seem reserved at first and friendships build slowly, but the culture is fair, orderly and deeply respectful of personal time. The large international community makes a soft landing easy.

Once you have your personnummer, apply for BankID immediately — it is the key to banking, healthcare (1177) and government services. Free SFI (Swedish for Immigrants) classes are widely available, and joining a union such as Unionen is common for white-collar workers.
